Boston Prep is a college-preparatory charter public district, made up of a single-site High and high school.In 2025-2026, our community will include 700 students in grades 6-12, nearly 500 alumni, over 150 faculty members, and hundreds of families. The majority of our students and families reside in Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, and Hyde Park. As a High School Dean of Curriculum & Instruction. .

The Role in Context

  • The DCI is the instructional expert on the team, a key driver for increased teacher effectiveness and improved student outcomes. The DCI is a key member of the High School Leadership Team (HSLT) and functions as strategist, coach, and department leader. The DCI is responsible for leading specific content departments as well as managing and coaching the teachers in those departments. The DCI will need to collaborate with key stakeholders across the High school, especially the teachers in their departments, to ensure high quality curriculum implementation and pedagogy. In addition, the DCI is responsible for modeling and upholding the academic and culture systems and expectations that define the Boston Prep student experience.

Primary Responsibilities:

Vision and Strategy

  • With the Principal and the Chief Academic Officer, set 6-12 instructional goals to ensure focused, grade level work across our science and math classes
  • Partner with the Principal and other members of the HSLT to identify instructional trends, setting action plans, as needed
  • Model and consistently communicate organizational standards for instruction, classroom culture, content knowledge and continuous learning
  • Communicate regularly with the HSLT to problem solve and prioritize issues that impact classroom and or school culture, retention of team, etc.
  • Review academic programs, initiatives and interventions, annually
  • Participate in the hiring process for core instructional roles.

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Observe classes in the departments you lead regularly, in service to identifying instructional and curricular trends
  • With principal and CAO, setting 6-12 instructional goals to ensure focused, grade level work across content areas
  • Partnering with the HSLT to identify instructional trends, setting action plans, as needed
  • Support teachers with their instructional pacing, aligned to course scope and sequences, to ensure mastery of necessary standards
  • Support teachers in the internalization and/or development of UnboundEDs GLEAM (Grade Level, Engaging, Affirming, Meaningful) aligned unit and lesson plans
  • Ensuring curriculum is aligned with MA Curriculum Frameworks, relevant and rigorous enough to ensure fulfillment of school mission
  • Teach up to one section of Ethics

Assessment

  • Guide teachers and content areas to develop and implement high quality assessments, monitor and guide the type, variety and quality of student assessments, and drive purposeful use of assessment data and feedback

School Culture

  • Partnering with team members, students and families, to actively uproot racism and inequality in our community
  • Modeling empathy, embodying the mindset that kids do well if they can
  • Upholding school and grade level systems and structures with fidelity
  • With the other members of the High School Leadership team, ensure the proper functioning of the school via structures and support for staff and students.

Team Development and Coaching

  • Coach up to eight teachers, aligned to our internal Effective Teaching Rubric and school priorities
  • Lead two content area departments, including planning and facilitating weekly meetings focused on a cycle of inquiry rooted in UnboundEDs GLEAM (Grade Level, Engaging, Affirming, Meaningful) Instruction

Data Management and Analysis

  • Analyze data on student achievement and assessment, using it to inform instruction and professional development
  • Analyze, share and interpret internal and external school assessments (SAT, MCAS, Star Reading, iReady etc.), ensuring data is used strategically to improve student performance
  • Monitor and report on annual school goals, as defined by the Strategic Plan, to the Chief Academic Officer and other stakeholders

Professional Development

  • Plan, lead and facilitate orientation for new and returning team members
  • Identify and coordinate external professional development opportunities for the team, as well as plan and facilitate internal professional development for the team to drive growth.
  • Plan, lead, and facilitate school-based professional learning sessions, in accordance with the districts PD calendar

Community Engagement

  • Communicating frequently with students, families, and school leaders around academic and behavioral progress
  • Attending occasional after-school events

Management/Supervision

  • Monitor staff attendance and schedule attendance meetings in accordance with school policy
  • Write and implement performance improvement plans for staff members who consistently do not meet expectations
  • In consultation with HR, investigate allegations of staff misconduct; hold investigatory meetings; issue investigation outcomes
  • Mediate staff conflicts; when principal mediations do not resolve the conflict, consult with HR on next steps
  • Follow the steps in the annual performance management cycle for all direct reports; ensure all other school-based managers adhere to the annual performance management cycle

Professional Growth

  • Consistently model and practice key leadership routines to stay sharp, including but not limited to: observation/feedback coaching; weekly data meetings; professional development design and facilitation
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance leadership skills and stay current with educational best practices.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of previous teaching experience is required. In a charter school setting is a plus. Experience with diverse student populations and inclusive education practices is a plus.
